Paradigms

by Gopal Ramasammy-Cook (Career-Creative Coach, ZestWare)

Two broad categories or paradigms of creativity are:

  • Artistic Creativity, which includes the creation and use of pictures, sculptures, stories, poetry, music, dance, performances, etc. This form of creativity is often considered to be the domain of artists, or people in "creative professions" such as advertising.

  • Creative Thinking, which is usually associated with Creative Problem Solving. This form of creativity is usually associated with the solution of problems in fields such as business, economics, politics, technology, or science.

While many creativity practitioners lean towards one or other of these two paradigms, I believe that there are benefits to embracing both. When taking such an inclusive approach, it becomes obvious that the two approaches overlap and complement each other substantially.

Artistic creativity involves the use of creative thinking, while serving as a low-risk laboratory for learning tacit skills for the solving of problems related to composition, balance, and harmony in the pursuit of desirable aesthetic objectives. Together these two creative paradigms provide a rich array of tools and techniques that can be applied to complex objectives such as the achievement of career-creative harmony.
