Creative Tools: Experimentation

by Gopal Ramasammy-Cook (Career-Creative Coach, ZestWare)

An experimental approach and ethos is not only a powerful creative tool, it is essential for creativity to flourish. We all have wonderful ideas, and we often expect our ideas to be directly translated into creations that work perfectly first time.

But this seldom happens except in the simplest of cases. The detail, complexity, messiness, and unpredictability of the real world usually means that some modification, tinkering, or fine-tuning of the original idea will be necessary, no matter how thorough and detailed our plans. So a more realistic approach would be to to treat every creative endeavor as a prototyping process, and start experimenting with implementation sooner rather than later.
